This might shadow the fact however, that there were good reasons for this trial in the first place. Vandalised cars, stalking, threatening mail, acts of terror with butyric acid, et cetera.
And although the accused may very well have been morally responsible for the crimes committed, they are not legally. And that′s the point of it.
In Austria, not the one who suggests a crime is to blame for it, but the one who actually does it. If I say, “XY is a bad man and something should be done about him”, I am not responsible for someone burning his house down, the arsonist is. The effort of the police to condense this moral responsibility into convictions for organised crime failed.
It is my hope that this outcome of the trial does not result in an increase of animal rights terror, however.
