2010-03-28, hunting the Tolstoi-anecdote

Leo Tolstoi, often quoted by veggies,1 was a typical Russian aristocrat, thus he was an agglomoration of talents, ideals and spleens.

But there are also other interesting things about him to know, for instance, not only did he oppose the killing of animals, he also had no big trouble with it as long as he could turn a blind eye on it when it did comfort him too much to be worth the trouble avoiding it. It is said that his vegetable dishes occasionally where made with bovril, and that he was not concerned about it at all. Butas interesting this may beI have one big problem with it:

I cannot verify this anecdote.

I consider it to be very likeley, and absolutely plausible, it would fit perfectly to what I know about Tolstoi allready, but I cannot verify it. I will keep trying, tough, but that′s the disadvantage of working with scientific methods: You don′t just accept things as facts just because they fit your view on the world.

Footnotes:
1: “As long as there are slaughterhouses, there will also be battlefields” and “Animals are my friend and I don′t eat my friends” are quotes from Tolstoi.
