about veganism.

2009-12-25, “I saw it on TV”…

Obviously, many vegetarians (or even vegans) turned to their way of life because they saw how animals are being bred, kept and eventually slaughtered in factory farms and meat plants.

In fact, they actually didn′t see all this themselves, but they watched it on TV. That made me wonder if those people even have any idea about how TV-reports are being made, so I took the opportunity to videotape a walk through the inner district(s) of Vienna and cut those twenty minutes down to five different videos.

  • In video #1 you see only red traffic lights. If you only knew that video, you would think of Vienna being a city where pedestrians are always kept waiting, for cars take precedence.
  • In video #2 you see only green traffic lights.
  • In video #3 you only see some Christmassy lanes, beautifully decorated.
  • In video #4 I only used footage where I walked through crowds of people and
  • in video #5 I only used footage where few to no people can be seen.

So, depending on what footage I used and what I left out, you may get completely different impressions on what Vienna might be.

This is of course also true for slaughterhouses, farms, factory farms, meat plants, I guess none of the veggies have ever been to such a facility, checked for themselves, andif they ever made that kind of visitunderstood why things are that way, for instance, that device that keeps a mother sow from turning around prevents the piglets from being crushed under their own mother, for pigs don′t care about such things even if they have enough space.

And so the naïve li′l veggie watches a report on TV, no idea about nothing, and stops eating meat because of what there is to see.

Which world are those people living in?
