2009-09-26, a child, a bunny, and an apple
There is a quote frequently appearing on vegan websites:
Put a small child in a playpen with an apple and a bunny. If they eat the apple and play with the bunny, they are normal, but if they eat the bunny, and play with the apple, I′ll buy you a new car. Somewhere along the line we must have been TAUGHT to do the wrong thing.

And whenever I read it, or hear someone say it in a video, I wonder: Did they ever try it out? Did anyone ever try it out? I guess not.
You see, I am the oldest of five children, my youngest sibling is about twenty years younger than myself, my grandparents have over one or two dozens of grandchildren, and my parents being the oldest children of their respective parents too, there were always small children around as I grew up. So I doubt, yes, I doubt that a infant would “eat the apple and play with the bunny”, my guess is that they would ignore the apple (for it ain′t move) and pay their whole attention to the bunny, however this may work out in detail, and here are my guesses:
- The child is scared of bunny and starts crying, while bunny is certainly very interested in the apple and starts nibbling it.
- The child grabs bunny and puts it in the mouth.
- The child grabs bunny and pulls its ears.
- The child grabs bunny and does something else that is very unpleasant for it, mind that children
― especially small ones ― have not learned yet that you mustn′t torture animals. - If the child can already walk, it′ll joyably squeal “BUNNNNIIEEE!”, and chase down the poor thing while bunny makes a run for it.
- If the child cannot grab bunny, it′ll continue trying.
- In all cases, the apple is moreless ignored by the child.
Small children are fascinated by things that move and make noises, they do not know about not torturing animals, at least not yet, and unless not yet taught so they may not even know that you can eat an apple, and maybe even if they knew, they wouldn′t, simply because a small child does not have the teeth for it
All in all, it is very unlikely that they ever tried out to “put a small child in a playpen with an apple and a bunny” … but hey, since when does veganism have to do even anything with reality?
