2009-01-06, dead chickens…

Did you enjoy New Year′s Eve? Do have an optimistic view on your life in 2009? Yes? Then you′re certainly not a chicken in an Austrian laying battery. Why? Well, you may watch my latest YouTube-Video to find out:

If you cannot or do not want to, here′s the story: Animal welfare laws in Austria make it illegal to keep chickens in cages from 2009-01-01 on, with other words: Laying batteries become outlawed.

Unfortunately however, a lot of farmers cannot afford the investments required, if they want to stay in business. But if cages are outlawed, which means, they must not keep their chickens any longer, where should they go? The website of the Austrian newspaper Link:Kurier gives us a clue, a veterinarian says:

Wenn eine Verwertung der eingesperrten Hühner nicht möglich ist, werden sie mit Kohlendioxid in eigenen Containern erstickt.

Translated, this means that if it is not possible to keep the chickens save or move them to a place where they can be threated according to the laws, theyare to be killed. With carbon dioxide.

Also, it is still legal to import eggs from laying batteries, so, conclusively, some ten thousand chickens get killed, a bunch of farmers are ruined, and the suffering of chickens in laying batteries in continued, altough this happens abroad.

Looks like as if everybody wins here…
